Red Book Standard
The universal standard for audio CDs. The format requires that the audio be recorded in stereo at 44.1kHz sample rate with a 16 bit word, among other things.

Their main focus is to protect the intellectual property rights of musicians and to monitor and review laws pertaining to the music business.
